Excellent article KK, but with all due respect dont all of these companies have Podiatry advisor's that they pay.

Were their Podiatry advisor's asleep at the wheel when these claims were drafted or did they help actually draft them?

  2. Actually, I thought all these companies had Pedorthic advisors that they pay....;):drinks

The problem is that the companies created their "sceintific" or "medical" advisory boards or whatever they call them with fan boys that just parrot the company line and do not give them the advise that they probably did not want to hear or were not interested in hearing.

Just look at who is on the vibram board and they got sued for making false scientific/medical claims ... go figure.

    Aloha,

Good topic and synopsis of the legal proceedings.

Although I think many of the suites were just settled with coupons instead of hard cash.

As physicians perhaps we should consider if our "claims of cures" for Podiatric pathologies is rightly justified. Dr. Nigg's latest book "The Biomechanics of Sports Shoes" has a lot to say in chapter 4 on orthotics. Could we be putting ourselves at greater risk if we direct a bright light on footwear and orthotics claims??

    Kevin is correct,
"I believe that if podiatrists want to truly be considered the experts in foot-health care for the public, we must stand up and be counted as being the medical experts on shoes, shoe biomechanics and shoe health benefits."

I would urge those of you interested in standards and testing to join us on the American Society of Testing Materials F13 Footwear Safety and Traction committee.
