I believe recent MHRA action has removed a number of nail antifungals from the market, among them Phytex and monphytol, which proved to be cost effective options.
Podiatrist/ supplementary prescribers, must be given a broader spectrum of prescription medicines in this field or face loosing their patients confidence.

Does anyone from experience recommend any good alternatives which are "cost effective" and proved efficient?

I not familiar with MHRA action (?) but wasn't Phytex just a low dose of salicylic acid?

  3. Boric acid, tannic acid, methyl salicylate and salicylic acid. Although somewhat dated, this 2003 review suggested the following: "There are no published studies on the efficacy of salicylic acid (PhytexÒ; Pharmax, Bexley, U.K.) and methyl undecenoate (MonphytolÒ; LAB, London, U.K.) in fungal nail infection and their use cannot be recommended." http://www.bad.org.uk/Portals/_Bad/Guidelines/Clinical Guidelines/Onychomycosis.pdf N.B. the potential conflict of interest of the lead author.

Perhaps someone knows of a more recent study which recommends the use of Phytex based upon sound scientific evidence?
