Hi, I am a second year student new to this website, we have recently been informed of placement abroad, I am just wondering if anyone on here thinks it is worth spending a four or five week placement abroad (anywhere but UK), would this enhance podiatry skills or is it more for personal gain? Loads of work for pods in Aus.

But as a student you cannot t/t pts only observation, and ancilliary duties.

The pod practice i worked for in Sydney had student placements which were assessed according to specific criteria . None of the students were allowed to t/t pts.

If you could get a placement within the Hopital system, not private practice, it might be different.

Thank you David, from what most podiatrist are telling me it seems abroad would not gain much experience except open my eyes to what is out there, after thinking about it i feel it would be something to do when fully qualified. Thank you for your time

gina you cant work at all untill you are qualified no such thing as a work placement but you can observe and be supernumary go somewhere hot im sure it would be a great idea to shadow a pod in aus canada or usa. go girl go your r only young once and it would make your cv more interesting.

 

Hi, Gina I did lots of work expereince as a student - hands on. Its the best way to learn. There is only so much observational clincis you can do - to be honest they would get boaring if all you did is watch. We were doing basic stuff in year 1 like nail cutting ect & callus debridement - in the 2nd year we moved on to more indepth treatments like ulcers, biomechanics ect - sometimes be throwing in the deep - end with supervision is the nest way! I did my training in the UK then emigrated to Aus - but alot of my placements were NHS based with heaps of 'hands on'. I know some universities let students come over here to Aus for placements - which would be great - but in all honestly you are likely to learn just as much in the UK and save yourself the money.
