Good News On POM,s

Thank you for your good news I am sure the profession will greatly improve
as a result of this long awaited and necessary improvement to its scope of practice.
I must say it is disappointing to hear that it will take so long for podiatrists/chiropodists to update, which deflates this great day in our professions history.
Will the HPC be responsible for running the courses necessary to update those holding current LA certificates or will the Society incorporate the course work at respective Schools of Podiatry?

I also contacted the HPC this week, the response was that they are currently looking into how the courses will be set up & which ones will be accredited & that they would contact me again shortly

I spoke to the Society and the HPC along time ago regards these matters.
The Society said this has nothing now to do with them, post grad or undergrad.

Anything to do with undergrad education is now in the hands of the HPC they are the gods now.

The Society has reduced itself to a mere union.

The HPC said they have had one University approach them regards an update, this is ongoing and the HPC said it could take 9 months to rubber stamp.

I would imagine this is already or will shortly be incorporated into the BSC courses but again, this is in the hands of the HPC now.

We are STUCK.

PS. Thanks Philip Milsom, the biggest leap in Podiatry for along time but the Society should never of given away its power.

My understanding of the situation with the new drugs list is that those practioners who already hold a medicines certificate can access without further training. This would seem reasonable as all of these drugs were available in the NHS to the consultants and other specialists on protocol for several years. Perhaps somebody will tell me if Iam wrong.

Update training for POMs

Whilst the new medicines are now available to practitioners who are currently annotated on the HPC register, there is an updating requirement to ensure safe practice and professional indemnity cover: The level of training will vary depending on the Podiatrists current status on the HPC register.

A. Update training for those registered in the use of POM’s

1. It will be necessary to undergo training in Immediate Life Support to include the use of adrenaline in resuscitation. Information on courses that are locally available is obtainable on the internet by typing in to Google “Immediate Life Support Course Centres”. Half-day refresher courses are also available

2. Updates to ensure safe, effective and competent in the use of the new additional Medicines is required. This should include the following aspects related to the use of microbials .
• prudent use;
• diagnosis; culture and sensitivity
• selection;
• dose;
• duration of course of antibiotic;
• resistance;
• contra-indications;
• selective toxicity;
• adverse side effects

• NB Training in the use of Methylprednisolone as an injectable steroid into soft tissue is currently covered at post-registration level in courses approved by the Society. Practitioners are recommended to follow such an approved course before injecting steroids. Update training for those registered with POMs certification in the use of these agents will be available from universities in the near future.

B. Update training for those not registered in the use of POM’s on the HPC’s register.

Podiatrists who are not currently registered for POMs on the HPC register will need to undergo a post-registration pharmacology module. Modules will become available to registrants who are annotated on the HPC registered for the use of LA in the near future. These courses will require prior approval by the HPC, a process which may take some time to implement. Such courses will become available in universities as and when they are approved by the HPC.


C. Undergraduate training for those registered in the use of POM’s

Undergraduate pharmacology and local analgesia syllabi will be adapted to enable new graduates to access these drugs. Currently all university undergraduate modules are approved by the HPC for POMs certification.

• An updated pharmacology syllabus is obtainable from the Society if required
• Immediate life Support training needs to be added to the syllabus. This should be linked with the safe use of adrenalin for resuscitation purposes.

Those who already hold a POMs certificate will not be required to undertake further training. Life support training annually is required. This comes direct from the SoCP and assume they have got it right.

No Direction From HPC & Society.

It seems that Podiatrists are at a loss when it comes to further education and continued professional development. I attempted to contact the Society on this matter on several occasions and received no reply. I am in the process of sending yet another E-mail to the HPC as the first got no reply.
It would appear that we are in a DIY profession that lacks the decency of communication.

Jack - the information I posted on training came directly from David Gould at the SCP earlier this week. Hopefully we may hear from the HPC sooner rather than later on the matter of course validation and I'll let you know as soon as they do.
