I hope we don't have problems with this - I think it is great!

  3. Think we should try and recruit them to our colours and revert to our traditional title of chiropodist - which means 'hand and foot'. Our foot and hand surgeons can then enjoy equal status in their private practices. And no doubt enjoy the endorsement of our orthopaedic friends.

This is common practice, in the US, with PA's assuming similar responsibilities. The Physician's Assistant, here, works with a recognized qualification, and in many diverse areas of medicine. General medicine floor, the Emergency Room, the Operating room etc. I work, shoulder to shoulder, with these good folk. They do a great job. And why shouldn't they. The tasks assigned are acquired through repetition and under supervision. When the surgeon feels comfortable, the PA is afforded their confidence. An interesting career option. 2 year school, freedom to move between specialism, good pay, no malpractice insurance concerns etc.
