Cops: Foot problem to blame in hospital crash

Numb feet are blamed as the cause of a crash that damaged the entrance of OSF St. James-John W. Albrecht Memorial Medical Center.

Juanita Fansher, 79, of Pontiac, was treated at the hospital and released.

On Thursday afternoon, Fansher was driving west on Ewing Drive when she turned into the hospital parking lot. When she approached the circle turn in front of the entrance, she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brakes.

Fansher told police she has a medical condition that causes her feet to go numb, and that they were numb at the time of the crash.

Fansher’s car went through two sets of sliding glass doors before hitting the information desk. No one was in the car’s path but hospital spokeswoman Pam Meiner said a couple people witnessed the accident from the other side of the lobby.

Hospital staff worked quickly to clean up broken glass and installed a temporary door. Meiner said signs have been posted around the area and hospital staff are assisting visitors by helping to open the doors.

“I can say that everything is back to normal,” she said.

An early estimate put damage at $30,000. A more detailed estimate is expected.
