Has anyone heard about the use of cloramphenicol ( over the counter -antibiotic eye drops - commonly used to treat conjunctivitis) as a first line therapy for infected ingrowing nails in healthy patients? I had been informed by another podiatrist that it was acceptable for use but haven't been able to find any details anywhere.

    Hi AliceP
I recently had an elderly lady who had been using an eye drop that her GP had prescribed for her mycotic nails. Unfortunately it caused a large amount of subungal maceration and breakdown of the nail bed. I'm not sure if she used it as the GP had prescribed, but based on the resulting wound, I would not recommend this treatment to any other clients.
