I have a paper pending publication in the UK Podiatry Now journal relating to the bioethics of foot cosmetic surgery. Part of the paper deals with apotemnophilia which is the psychological conditon where people feel compelled to self amputate. Toe sculpting (amputating toes) has become reasonably common among modern primitives and may be used to demonstrate belonging to a group or sect as well as simple body embellishment such as piercing, scarification and tattooing. As a masters student reading forensic sexology I had a semester researching sexual paraphilias and feet and shoes. Incredibly interesting topic which might not appear associated to podiatry perse but does certainly involve many of our patient population, believe it or not. Most practitioners remain completely oblivious to this.
