    Hi,

I recently saw a child (5yrs old) that was reluctant to wear shoes as they cause discomfort. He has no problems with shoes that use velcro straps.
He has not learnt how to tie shoes and there is no developmental reasons for this, apart from not having the tuition.
The mother has asked me for an aid to help her teach tieing laces.

This is not something i have encountered professionally or as a student. So i was wondering if anyone has techniques/aids that they use with patients to help with learning to tie shoes?

The Arena'ettes decided they wanted to tie their own shoelaces after watching Special Agent Oso come to the rescue to help a kid tie her shoelaces.

    Make it a game.

Lace end in each hand & make a loop with one lace (The tree)

    Other lace is the 'rabbit'.

The rabbit goes around the 'tree' & the pops into the 'burrow' made by the 'rabbit'.

    Worked for our kids.

We have noticed over the last few years that the size shoes that we provide with velcro as a posed to lace up has gotten larger.

Three years ago we stopped our velcro Derby at size 1 which covered most prep and grade 1 children, we now go up to size 4 and have occasional get a request up to size 6, this would be on average a grade 6 child.

l dont think our kids are getting dumber, its just their parents are spending less time been parents, a good bonding exercise, how did your parents teach you with
a bit of TLC with a healthy helping of patience.

If all fails send the child to Grandma's place, works every time they tell me:D

You can buy model shoes specifically designed to help chilren with laces zips and velcro. Most quality toy stores will have these. Prices vary but I saw a cardboard model in the $2.00 shop recently.

They are quite easy to make and consist of a cardboard back with shoe components glued in layers to provide a plan view. By incorporating different materials (textures) and lacing vamps you can make any combination of styles. A super project.

If you contact Clarks footwear they have fantastic cards with the shoe outline on them and holes for the laces. They come with laces! They are great for giving to patients to try and also for the waiting area for parents to assist while waiting!!
