masking skin for verrucae

I am recently qualified and have been treating a verrucae with salicylic acid cream (60%).
The problem I have found relates to masking of the healthy surrounding skin, a common problem suggested by Potter and Bristow(2006).
Vaseline does not appear to mask sufficently. Various tapes also appear to not work perfectly as moleskin is too porous and duct tape does not really adhere to the skin.
Does anyone have any suggestion as to what will adequately mask the healthy surrounding skin?

    Hi,
I find that a 6mm SCF pad cut to the precise(ish) area of the VP/tx area works well, and so far I havent experienced/noted any seepage from the area, and it maintains the integrity of the healthy skin.

  3. Thanks, I will try it out.

I use sports strapping which seems to work well.

  5. Thanks - is that zinc oxide? I have found that that comes off it the feet are slightly hyperhydrotic. Or do you use something else?

    Hi Patricia,
If you swab the area well with IMS ( or any other de-greasing agent) let it dry and then use good 'ole zinc oxide tape with an aperture cut into it you should be OK. There is no reason why the ZO shouldn't stick to the skin.

    Hope that helps

I find elastoplast zinc oxide strapping following an application of opsite spray usually works - just need to keep an eye on allergic reaction.

  9. Thanks very much - I am surprised how many people are allergic to zinc oxide so a good tip to bear in mind. regards Trish

Hi, vasaline can work quite well, depending on how you administer the salicylic acid. But I would agree with using a apeture pad or tape to mask.

Are you finding much of a result using 60% salicylic acid? How many treatments do? As a rule I don't treat verrucas much now as I find they don't respond that well. I usually offer simple debridement, possible padding with advise on all the different treatment options. I have found that resolution is poor and patients can have unrealistic expectations (especially if paying for treatment). I may use a low level acid if the patient s adamant on treatment or refer on to their GP or dermatology if they want stronger treatment rather than over the counter methods. I know there are heaps of methods out there but over the years found there are no definate solutions that gurantee results.
May be I should stop buying a lotto ticket and use the money to find a cure! LOL
