Hi,
My 6 mo has MEtatarsus abductus. Her father and I noticed curvature of foot from about 2.5/3 months of age. I mentioned it to her pediatrician at 4 months and was told it’s normal. We took her to an orthopedic surgeon on our own at 5.5 months. What conservative treatments are available for this condition? The forefront of her feet are very flexible and she is asymptomatic. The ortho’s office wanted to do xray of foot and pelvis ( to rule out DDH). I declined, doc did not seem very pleased and kept trying to explain why it is needed. Clinical exam for DDH was negative. Doc mentioned xray of foot will provide baseline and better help him determine what exercises are needed. I still declined. He gave us referral for PT and showed us stretching exercises to do at home. We return in 2 months for eval. If baby needs casts do they need xray images to apply cast? I am strongly opposed to xray at this tender age. Thanks for your input.

 

Where does the evidence take you? In the first place, why are you so strongly against (appropriate) X rays at "this tender age"? What does the evidence say? Secondly, what does the evidence say about treatment, including casting? Go where the evidence takes you is firm advice - and take evidence from appropriate refereed sources, not the bus stop.

 

What is the purpose of your response? Nothing in my post indicated I was taking evidence from the bus stop. If you have no appropriate response there is no need to respond to my postc

But as Rob indicated got get the x-ray and consult with the appropriate specialist in your area

 

Are any of you experienced in treatment options for MA? Please stop assuming I am asking u to tell me what to do. My post clearly states that an orthopedic specialist was seen. Yes, I am in the medical profession ( hope this helps u to feel more at ease that I am on this forum) but as pediatrics not podiatry is not my area of expertise I thought a forum with those in this area would be a good place to hear thoughts on conservative treatment options being used today. I am not asking for any medical advice——I am simply asking the views of the medical professionals in podiatry on conservative treatment options for MA.

FYI X-rays are not required for diagnosis or treatment of MA- and AGAIN I did not ask for advice on whether or not to do an X-ray. If this SITE has strict requirements for content then I missed it.

 

I seem to have offended you - that was not my intent. Lets take this slowly. My point re treatment of met adductus (I assume you had a typo for met abductus - if you did not , then I really grovel). Serial casting, in my very limited experience, has a bad rap for a lack of evidenced based practice. What does Cochrane say? That is where I would go.
