I’ve spent much of my career feeling like this too.
I started working as a podiatrist 17 years ago. Since then, I’ve worked in both the public and private sectors, in Australia and overseas. I’ve worked in large organisations and small, been paid via salary and fee-sharing, worked in areas related to podiatry (boot fitting in a Canadian ski resort) and spent time completely away from the profession (guiding walks through the Italian Dolomites). I’ve presented at conferences, lectured and supervised students at University. In summary, I have had a real breadth of experience within the profession. Sadly, I’ve spent much of that time feeling unhappy and disengaged at work.
So I did lots of research and eventually enrolled in a business mentoring program. As a result, I now love what I’m doing, I’m really clear on where I’m going and am full of motivation.
I’ve spent as much time on my own personal development as I have on my business. I’ve learnt the importance of integrating my work into my lifestyle so they both benefit each other. I’ve also realised the key factors that make up a healthy workplace and a happy podiatrist.
The main thing I’ve learnt though, is that I really enjoy helping others get the most out of their career. As such, I’m now ready to recruit a podiatrist into my business to undergo a mentoring program that I’ve created. This is not just a job – it’s a structured two-year process that will firstly help you clarify where you want to go, and then help you get there.
We’ll work together every week on your career – not my business or my career, but yours.
We’ll set goals and I’ll be delighted when you reach them. I’ll devote half a day every month and one full day every quarter, to help you reach these goals. Again, not my goals, but yours.
Yours might be to continue working as an employed podiatrist, with a diverse caseload, or to forge ahead in a particular area of expertise. You might like to step up into a managerial role, or you might want to run your own business. And it’s fine if you’re a bit unsure…we can explore a few ideas together and decide which path to take later.
