Hi all,
Just a quick question regarding SOCAP Registration, out of interest i was wondering how many of our fellow podiatrists are active members of the society?

Any of you that are not current members, i would be happy to hear from you as to your thoughts on this

Yes sorry for the random question i realise it is rather a bizzare one! Only i am a new grad podiatrist and have been told by more than one of my colleagues that they are no longer members of SOCAP, this has confused me as i do not understand why??

As a podiatrist is this not our only form of insurance and professional advice on certain matters or does our HPC registration cover us?

You can obtain prefessional indemnity insurance from any professional body, or indeed if you are in private practice, you can `go it alone` and get it directly from the insurers.

My advice; shop around. The SCP is just one of many professional bodies out there. It depends what you want from your prof body. Ask your colleagues why they have chosen an alternative provider of insurance.

HPC registration does NOT cover this. As a government watchdog (and a snarling one at that) they are not interested in which prof body you are a member of and they will certainly not offer professional advice.

I'm a member of SCP, but I as I work overseas I've opted to take the option without insurance. I've maintained my membership because it's cheaper than joining the Association over here, & I'm nosey about what's going on in my former homeland! It also allows me to access JFAR online.

For those members working in the public sector, SCP is a recognised trade union, and as such will provide representation should it be required.

As Bel says, it's up to you whether to join, and depends on what you want out of it.

The answer is Blue, that you do not 'register' to be a member of any professional body. You simply pay your money and join. Registration is via the HPC, which you do not need unless you are working in the NHS or a private hospital where this is required, although you might have a fight on your hands if you elect not to register and wish to use the term 'chiropodist' or 'podiatrist'.

There are several alternative professional bodies to the Society, you could try the Institute but, as has been mentioned above, you do not need to join any - despite the HPC it's still a free world (I think).

However, you do need HPC Registration if you wish to order certain medicaments and Local Anaesthetics. Your number will be required before an order is processed.

You will also need to be registered with the Health Professions Council if your patients have private medical insurance & need to claim their fee.
