We have a jokes thread, so thought a music thread is required. I saw Sam, Simon and Mark discussing their guitar´s. Mart and Kevin have discussed a Podiatry Anthem somewhere. Robert has said you can tell alot by the music they link to in their Posts.... So I though a new thread which people can list their 5 Favourate Rock songs. Links to You Tube are encouraged. Yes Simon you can put 5 U2 songs in if you want !!.

Niiiiice thread.
Don't know what the purests define as "rock" but here are mine.
Iron Man - Black Sabbath. Not the most melodic of songs but for sheer visceral emotion it can't be beat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GECit4oSpbk
Don't Fear the Reaper, The HIM version (Blue oyster cult original is good too). For the guitar solo in the middle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYuQBfXaZd4
Fear of the Dark - Iron Maiden. For the changes in pacing Live versions better than album versions IMVHO

Evanescance - Bring me to Life. Because it is just so darn moving

Re-arranged - Limp Bizkit. Because the "angry white boy" genre needs representing and because its so easy to relate to (for me)

On a side note does anyone( without using the search engines) know what Joy Division were named after. A beer for the 1st correct answer if we ever meet at a conference or course in the future.

Too hard and changes by the day. So I'll give you my daily favourite, each day I remember to. Today's top-copy is for driving to:
Deep Purple- Highway Star, live version from the album "Made in Japan"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgZSnAkQc4c
While your in driving mode have "speed king" by the same band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Djwv-M_saU&feature=related
Buy the album "Made in Japan" play it in your car, then speak nicely to the traffic officer who has just pulled you over as he says something like "please step out of the vehicle"...
Back tomorrow with something different. -
(Sigh)...Y`know I don`t really like rock, but if you insist;
Judgement Day - Whitesnake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9w-dQiiS0s
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zep http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1hol_led-zeppelin-whole-lotta-love_music
Changes- Ozzy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQWLJSLiCbM
Wasted Years - Iron Maiden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOVzXYEU3Bk

A bit from the bio of Joy Division.
-
Thin Lizzy- Live and dangerous- whole album
And if anyone mentions anything by Iron Maiden after Paul Di'anno left- they want ****ing- Phantom of the opera and Iron Maiden BTW , in fact the whole debut album. Bruce Dick never cut the mustard- he used to wear an executioners mask in Samson- very poor late '70's metal- still have a single by them somewhere. I've got my eye on you Isaacs. -
What have Joy Division and U2 got in common? -
While we are putting out threats in the nicest possible way. If anyone puts
-

Here´s one for you Simon. U2 stated as a cover band which band did they play covers from ?
-
In terms of covers U2 have covered songs throughout their career and continue to do so, you could be referring to The Clash or several others from this era- depends on your source of information.
Actually as a point of pedantry, by the time U2 became U2 as oppose to the Larry Mullen Band or The Hype- they were writing their own material and so weren't a "covers band" at all. -
-
Only two that get me into an altered state of consciousness? are ZZ Top's "Le Grange" and Pavarotti's (no one else's) "Nessum Dorna"!
Honourable mentions to Blind Willie Johnson, Son House and my favourite electric guitarist has always been Steve Morse! -

I voted for this song as the "all time number one song of all time" for a local radio station survey here in Sacramento in 1974.:drinks
Black Dog was another one I voted for as #1 during those high school years. -
Jimi (Purple Haze), Janice (Piece of my Heart), Doors (Light My Fire), Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit), CSNY (Woodstock)...........those were the days of real rock 'n roll.....you kids just don't know what you missed! -
When I saw this thread title I instantly knew it depended for its success on Twirly's entrie(s). And after perusing Twirly you haven't let us down!
For my part, in the late 60's of the Easybeats, whose rhythm guitarist, George Young, was AC/DC's Angus & Malcolm's elder brother; The Loved Ones "Ever Lovin Man", and the Masters Apprentices!
Went for my first live in 1970! I remember, later, The Saints with their "I'm Stranded",
Lou Reed, Leonard "I should have slit my wrists years ago" Cohen, Chain, the NZ'ers the La De Dahs (still the loudest group I've ever seen), the 69'ers (at the Arts Factory, off Hyde Park, Sydney, being chased by sharps and skinheads those were the days!)
I've got 3 LP's of AC/DC. In fact if you look at the "It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock'n'roll" video clip on the back of a truck in Melbourne you'll see my middle sister, Cherie, following on the footpath! MY ONLY CLAIM TO FAME! In my small collection I've got LP's (thats vinyl kids) of Zeppellin, Cream, The Band.
And I can always watch/listen to Johnny Rotten on 'Anarchy' and 'Vacant' (didn't care much for Sid). There. -
1. Tool - Parabol/Parabola
2. Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar
3. Disturbed - Deify
4. Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone
5. Queen - Fight from the Inside -
oh you said 5 did you Michael. oh
-
Since I have eschewed digital and gone almost 100% vinyl in recent years (Rega Planar 3, Mission 774 tonearm, Ortofon Rhondo Red cartridge, Pro-Ject Tube Box SE phono stage, Naim Nait 3 integrated amp, Linn Kan Mk 1 speakers); I shall provide my current faves on LP only;
1. Bryan Ferry - The Right Stuff
2. Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots
3. Midnight Oil - Best of Both Worlds
4. The Police - King of Pain
5. Quincy Jones - Ai No Corrida
Anyone else got any good phono kit? It's the only was to appreciate music...
