explains the grammar, I struggle to compose good grammar on mobile posts

  2. Grammar and punctuation are very important. Its the difference between:-

"I helped my uncle, Jack, off his horse"

    and

"I helped my uncle jack off his horse".

    Nice one, Smells.

I love the Arena. I`ve formulated some great friendships and professional relationships here. Re-thought my own perspectives and learnt a helluva lot. But, the sticks and stones threads like this are truly tiresome.

    Just my view. Carry on.....

I think we all get your point Blinda,

If you have a complaint why not address it to the OP and perpetrator of the asinine poll that sparked this discussion?

And if the thread is so banal why are you still contributing?

It has (so far) 1,152 views so someone, somewhere, must like it ?

Neither Dbz (nor the paedo) are my cuppa cake, thanks all the same.

I was just offering my humble opinion as ever. My post was not addressed to any particular individual.

Indeed. Never understood this `Big brother` voyeurism culture.

Ian I'm really hoping Robert does not answer, there is no good answer.

Pippa gets a nomination for temptation of the year....uhh....doughnuts yes!Wisedom tells me not to hit send but I'm feeling right Pithy today.

Now let's see Robert use pusillanimous in a sentence...

  18. I am far to pusillanimous to undertake such a challenge. Let see you use Floccinaucinihilipilification in a sentence ;)

The positive impact of positing such an erudite refutation of improper grammar and punctuation, is obviated by pursuing the same errors as the author being reprimanded. Too has two o's therefore that entire sentence is unfortunately a floccinaucinihilipilification.;)

My 'problem' with FHPs and foot care nurses and others who take a weekend course is the assessment and triage aspect of care. There are some people who have critically poor blood flow and are at risk of ischemic or venous ulcerations, as well as people who are at risk of diabetic neuropathic ulceration. These individuals still need a yearly exam with me; education on how to prevent ulceration and possibly insole palliation etc, even if they have easy to manage nails.

Yes it is easy to cut most people's nails, but can you identify what is going on beyond long nails and send them where they need to go?

I worked with a community foot care nurse who diligently sent me anything beyond her training/knowledge, and she loved learning about what was going on with the feet, she could identify problems more easily and better explain why the individual needed to attend an appointment with me. It was a great relationship. when the issue was dealt with they went back to her for trimming.
I have also unfortunately cleaned up the mess of those who go beyond their abilities (estheticians who butcher nails going after 'ingrowns' they've caused, nurses who do orthotics too etc)

Too little knowledge can be a dangerous thing if you cannot accept your limitations. I also have to send some of my patients on to other practitioners when I am out of my depth.

There are some people who are so compromised even I am wary to treat them; I know what can go wrong if I muck up, but also what can go wrong if it is not attended to. These are clients you would not want for liability reasons.

Learn how to identify the at risk and send them away, keep the easy low liability chip'n'clip.

    David,

Your "They become FHP's" remark I found unnecessarily rude and uncalled for. Judging by your general demenour I hope that on reflection you find it was, for a man of your maturity, somewhat beneath you.

    Brendan.

    podgs Welcome New Poster

    Coming from a different angle:

I know 2 mature people who did the FHP course with SMAE and neither of them got enough work to survive because they can't call themselves Chiropodists - one went on to do the degree, the other gave up.

I did the degree 3 years ago. As a mature student I had the work skills to get a decent part time job and because the fees are paid by the NHS the whole 3 years cost me 3 grand and that included loans. On the course there were many mature students (some in their 50s) as well as single mums - they all survived financially and are all now making a decent living.

As well as receiving an excellent education I can honestly say it was the best 3 years of my life - I have never laughed so much and felt so happy.

Once qualified you have the choice to work NHS, Private practice, freelance/locum or even work abroad. The FHP training establishments make it all sound so rosy but the truth is otherwise - don't forget they are a money making enterprise.

So regardless of all the other highly valid points made in this thread, looking at it from a purely personal angle, I believe you're better off doing the degree.

However difficult you think your situation is with regards to doing a 3 year degree I can guarantee there is someone in a worse position than you that has been through the process.

    Good luck

    Dear Brendan,

My remark was a reflection of the reality of the situation.

If an HPC reg Podiatrist is struck off the register. They are LEGALLY PREVENTED from using the titles of Chiropodist and Podiatrist. And can be prosecuted and punished in a Court of law should they do so.

See the Stephen Gardiner case recently. Interestingly he was grandparented onto the HPC being a NON State Registered Chiropodist. I believe he is now practicing as an FHP. You can look up his case on the HPC website.

Because these two titles are protected by Statute.

Anybody can use the title FHP.

I do not believe that it is a trademark so there is no legal impediment to ANYBODY using that title should they choose to do so.

To my knowledge the title of FHP did not exist prior to the formation of the HPC and the subsequent protection of title.

Hence a new name was needed by the private trainers in order to stay in the business of training practitioners outside of the University Education System and subsequent HPC registration.

    regards David
