    Metatarsophalangeal joint sprain

A metatarsophalangeal joint sprain is an injury to the connective tissue between the foot and a toe (at a metatarsophalangeal joint, one of the joints in the ball of the foot). When the big toe is involved, it is known as "turf toe".[1][2]

Many patients with turf toe do very well with a steel insole, either a full length or 1/2 length. It stabilizes the forefoot to allow the IPJ to heal.

I have come to see turf toe and hallux limitus as conditions which hurt because the MTP joint does NOT move when demand is the greatest. Looking at this as a problem which hurts because is moves misses the underlying issue. The most common issue is inhibition of the peroneus longus, and secondary failure to stabilize the joint during max demand. Manipulation of the ankle and cuboid and perhaps the 1st metatarsal cuneiform joint can resolve this spontaneously. I have treated this with success countless times. Using steel plates only serves to invert the foot and create symptoms elsewhere in the body.

It is rare to find a Podiatrist in the USA that uses manipulation as part of their treatment. It is sad, as it can be so helpful.

Great article. We use a carbon rigid stabilizer plate that prevents dorsiflexion with turf toe in football players.
