I have an 11 year old male patient with O-S Disease. Had been playing considerable amount of basketball/running (2 games per week, 3 official trainings per week, home training each day 1-2 hours). Patient has ceased all sport/running for last 2 weeks with significant reduction in pain (other treatment has included stretching, massage, ice, NSAIDS - topical & oral at different times plus heel raises/orthotics & footwear advice to correct some biomechanical issues). What is the protocol before allowing him to return to running/basketball? Should he not start until he is completely pain free? By pain free, should that be pain free to palpation or just to running/basketball?

He is very keen to return to basketball but Im very wary about not aggravating his condition & causing him an even longer lay off.
Any other suggestions or advice on treatment & management greatly appreciated.
