I'm a podiatry student. This month I have been asked to give a presentation on a topic of my choice, but I must choose a topic that has been disputed in conflicting journal articles. I am being asked to present the topic and 2 or 3 articles that may have evidence that refutes the other. I'm having a very difficult time choosing a topic. Any suggestions?

Some of the examples provided (which I can not use, of course):

Casting vs. ORIF of Jones fracture
Salacylic acid vs chryotherapy for plantar wart therapy
Weekly sharp debridement of ulcers vs bi-weekly

What about the evolutionary basis for foot deformity? Evolutionary medicine - in serious circles - is now a major theme. But then, one still has the odd creationist drum beater who wishes to swim against the tide of knowledge (not belief - knowledge). In the 1930's Morton wrote a book which I suspect modern Pods do not refer to: Morton DJ (1935) The Human foot: its evolution, physiology, and functional disorders. Morningside Heights, New York Columbia University Press.

This was the first of several in that era which suggested an evolutionary basis for deformity (EG HAV). To say they were laughed out of town would be an exageration, but there is a veneer of truth in this. Most of my working life has involved revisiting old works, in light of new information; I would recommend that you do the same. Rob

Are you in the UK? If so Alice Roberts has an excellent programme currently on BBC2 - simplified but not dumbed down - on this very subject. It is also worth digging out a copy of 'The Foot' 4th Edn. Lake N C. 1952. Bailliere, Tindall & Cox. London. Chapters 1-3. Although this was origninally written in 1935, and some of the material is now questioned, it is still a good basic text. David Holland who frequently posts on this site gained his Masters on the subject and should be able to help also.

We did similar at Uni with asymptomatic paediatric flat foot - to treat or not to treat. Plenty of papers around and useful stuff for when you go on into clinical practice.

 

How about needling versus duct tape for verrucae? A hot topic on this site if ever there was one!

 

I'd say jackies idea is a doozy. The treat bs not treat argument in paeds has lots of conflicting opinions.
