Re: Surgery for Retrocalcaneal Bursitis: A Tendon-splitting versus a Lateral Approach

I don't consider a retrocalcaneal exostosis the same as a Haglunds.

The Haglunds is associated with a rear foot cavus and occurs on the lateral/posterior surface of the os calcis. These are pressure related. These can frequently be removed with little or no involvement of the achilles.

Retrocalcaneal exostoses with bursitis is a different animal all together. Normally occurring in adults with or without a pes cavus, these are enthesopathies of varying degrees and conformation.
Surgery includes removal of the spurs, along with tendon debridement and usually removal of the superior angle of the posterior Os Calcis.

In simple terms......if it's posteriolateral and the patient is young - HAGLUNDS.
if the pain is medial/lateral and central with a large exostosis visualized on
    X-ray - RETROCALCANEAL EXOSTOSIS.

    Apples and oranges.

    Sorry:

I don't agree with their definition of Haglund's.

    "Endoscopic Calcaneoplasty (ECP)...."

Can't seem to get this study in it's entirety, or in English.

If anyone has the description of this procedure and the post operative care, please post.
    Thanks
