I worked with Falls Prevention (Stay on your feet WA), Injury Control Unit in Perth for many years as they were introducing their Falls prevention strategies. Very interesting it was too but what was disappointing was during the podiatry phase when local pods were openly invited to contribute ideas on the role of the podiatrist in the prevention of falls, there was a very disappointing return. Only a few individuals assisted and dedicated their time to the project but otherwise nothing.

I was particularly interested the other day to read the new brochure on Stay on your feet WA which boldly promotes the services of podiatry.

"Most participants reported that they were somewhat or very satisfied with the footwear (92.3%)"

l would think that was a good number, a lot of elderly women dont like being told what style shoe they have to buy, "Dont you have a slip on?" or "l would like something with more of a heel"

I am lucky to work in a Subacute setting and part of that role is a interdisplinary falls and balance group.

I have many roles within the clinic, but tend to spend alot of my time working on the clients beliefs and/ or values that they have around what footwear they wear and when. After I've looked at the whys they do, I usually slip in some of the researched causes of falls. Most clients are very suprised at the research of how their footwear and foot problems impact on the risk. Throwing in a few examples of thongs and slippers and hip fractures help to. I am lucky to work in a supportive multid team who then reiterate and follow up at each client visit. By the end of the client journey through the clinic, we have usually got the client to change their rountine and perceptions and utimately their footwear choices.

    Thanks for the journal articles.
