Efficacy of Semmes Weinstein monofilaments

    Part of the problem with SWME is that the filaments used in clinics are often of the cheap, noncalibrated throwaway caliber. Even if you do use the more costly, calibrated monofilaments, they are inaccurate after relatively short periods of time.

    Are we getting hung up on the efficacy? When we should be educating the poor victim at the other end. At one time the diabetic lead podiatrist at our trust performed foot screen after footscreen with very little time to educate the patient. This process did little for job satifaction and less for patient education, thankfully things have improved.
    I have carried out limited research myself into diabetic footcare knowledge in a none diabetic cohort compared a diabetic group matched for age and sex and surprise surprise the none diabetics appeared to have the better knowledge.
    The monofilament is a valuable tool but clinical experiance and education are stronger weapons.
    Please also take the time to educate other health professionals.
